What’s The Meaning of HVAC?

While most homeowners think of their system as either an AC or furnace, it’s commonly known in unprofessional circles as the HVAC system. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. These systems run throughout a home to circulate, heat, cool, and condition the air. They have become increasingly popular in new homes. These systems provide better air quality in the home by removing moisture, odours, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Like anything in the home, they require maintenance and professional service to keep them running in top shape.

In this article, HVAC experts share some insight into these systems and what homeowners should be doing to keep them in top shape.

Heating Services Through HVAC

Central heating has a primary heating appliance, which is the furnace usually. The furnace will create combustion gases that are then passed through a heat exchanger. It is then distributed through the ducts into the home. The heating component of the HVAC system is essential during the colder season and requires routine care.

When a technician is called out, they will check the heat exchangers for damage or corrosion, check the blower motor to ensure there are no loose parts creating noises, and inspect the thermostat to ensure temperatures are consistent.

During a heating maintenance appointment, they’ll also lubricate moving parts, inspect the vent system, and check the burner and flame sensor to ensure everything is working as it should during the winter months.

Ventilation is the “V” in HVAC. It’s one of the most important jobs that the HVAC system has. It’s responsible for bringing fresh air in and stale air out of the home. It uses mechanical ventilation and prevents the buildup of odours, pollutants, and moist air in the home. Moisture in the home can lead to mould and damage to floors and furniture.

During maintenance, a technician should check for clogged filters, condensation drains, damage to damper seals, clean parts such as heat exchange surfaces, and calibrate control features.

Lastly is air conditioning. This is one of the most popular ways a homeowner cools their home. The HVAC unit takes the warm air inside the home and blows it across the indoor evaporator coil. The heat is transferred to the refrigerant inside the coil, which then turns the warm air into cool air. Any heat that was absorbed by the refrigerant is then moved outside of the home. Any moisture that is affecting the humidity in the house will also be taken out of the air. The cooling system is combined with the central heating system because it utilizes the same ductwork.

The service on HVAC air conditioning can include removing debris, cleaning the fins, inspecting filters, cleaning evaporator coils, cleaning plugged evaporator drains, and inspecting around the unit.
