Blooming Trees Aren’t Always Beautiful- Sinuses Agree!

Spring is, for most people, a time to enjoy the warming weather by lounging outside, planting their gardens, or readying their landscape for evening summer get-togethers. But it may not be so joyous for those whose noses close at the first hint of awakening vegetation. Before jumping back inside the house and sealing every nook and cranny, there are ways to lessen the side effects of allergy season

purifiersPurify and Scrub the Air

The first way to combat pollen is by investing in air purifiers or air scrubbers. These machines were created to work alongside air conditioners to help clean the air of any pollutants that the air filter missed.

Air purifiers come in many different options, from standing in-room devices to ones attached to the ductwork inside the ceiling, floors, or walls. They work diligently to remove airborne pollen, mould, and other sinus closing particles.

Air scrubbers are essentially the same as an air purifier but hold one significant difference. Scrubbers can remove pollutants from surfaces inside the home and in the air. So, air scrubbers can help clear the collection of bacteria and pollen that is difficult to keep from building up on dressers, tables, and shelves.

Both remove up to 99.97 percent of indoor air particles, though their prices vary. Air purifiers are much cheaper than their more advanced counterparts, but air scrubbers remove particles from surfaces.

UV Air Sanitizers and Dehumidifiers

Another step towards allergy freedom is for homeowners to examine whether UV air sanitizers and dehumidifiers are worth it. They both purify the air just as normal air purifiers and scrubbers, but each use very different cleaning styles.

UV sanitizers pull air in through their intake vents, and once the air is inside, it passes through a UV light to break down unwanted particles. The lights inside the sanitizer pull the mould and mildew spores, pollen, and bacteria apart at the cellular level. After the breakdown occurs, the leftover particles are then trapped in a filter, and the clean air is expelled back into the room.

Dehumidifiers pull air into themselves the same way but use the water in the air to suck the pollutants out and file them into a water compartment for dumping. Dehumidifiers are best used during the summer months when the humidity peak. Bacteria, mould, and pollen can get trapped in the humidity and come through open windows, cracks, and seams. The dehumidifier works diligently to pull the particles from the air, relieving homeowners of their worst symptoms.

Schedule Maintenance and Filter Replacementmaintenance

Routinely scheduled maintenance of the AC unit is the best option for keeping the system running as it should. Without proper care, an air conditioner may work harder than it needs to in order to keep the air cool. Build up of chemicals, bacteria, and other sediments on a neglected unit can leach into the air as it passes through and blow into the home.

Air filters are another way to help keep allergens and pollutants from building up in the home. Homeowners should replace a filter every three months and more frequently in heavy pollen months.

There are three different types of air filters on the market, with varying ranges of effectiveness.

  • Fibreglass filters are the cheapest of all the filters and collect the least amount of pollutants from the air. These filters are created by layering fibreglass strands across each other in different patterns to bind particles that flow through onto its fibres. Because these filters are so thin, they will need replacing more often, at least once a month.
  • Pleated air filters are a step above fibreglass, as pleated air filters are much denser. Because of their heaviness collects significantly more dust particles than the fibreglass filter but still have a troublesome time ordering everything in the air.
  • HEPA Filters are the best filters on the market. They can collect 99.97 per cent of all particles that pass through them. This filter offers multiple layers of fibres to create a trap for allergens, mould, mildew, and dust. The multi-layer system ensures the most amount of particles is absorbed.
